The Journalistic Role Performance Project (JRP)is a cross-national, theory-driven endeavorestablished in 2013 to systematically analyze the state of journalistic cultures in the new media landscape across the world.The main goals of theProject are twofold. On the one hand, it aimsto explain how different dimensions of professional roles materialize in the news in different organizational, institutional and social settings. On the other hand, thestudy aims to deeply address the disconnection between professional and/or normative ideals and journalistic practices, explaining the gap between the importance that journalists and the media give to different professional roles, and journalistic role performance.The concept of journalistic role performance focuses attention on issues relating to structure, agency, culture, and political economy; all key issues to the understanding of journalism as a social practice.Thanks to the effort of different high-quality scholars from 19 countries, the first wave of theJRP project (2013-2018) analyzed the performance of professional roles in more than 35,000 news of print media, and more than 800 journalists were surveyed.The current secondwave of the Project (2019-2022)relies on aconsolidated networkincluding more than 45countries from America, Asia, Europe, The Middle East, Africa and Oceania. Itis comparingthe presence of different journalistic roles in the news content of television, radio, print and online media.Nine medias for each country are being sampled, taking into account their size, scope, market orientation, ownership, political leaning, and level of influence, in a way that best represented the diversity and shape of their own national media systems. A stratified-systematic sample of fourteendays from 2020was selected.In each country, independent coders were trained in the application of a common codebook containing operational definitions for each variable.To capture journalistic role conceptions, the JRP research surveysthe authors of the stories represented in the news sample (from 100 to 150 journalists per country)via aWeb-based questionnaires or face-to-face interviews. The main objectives of these International Study Days organized in Dijon on June 17 and 18, 2021, are to take stock of the methodological aspects of this researchand to draw the first results from the data from an international perspective. These workshops will be split into three phases. Thefirst session brings together each countryfor a working session behind closed doors. The second session is open to thepublic and devoted to the presentationsof the French, Italian and German teams of the JRP project, and to a first comparison of the results. Claudia Mellado(General CoordinationJRP Project) will also present the latest developments of JRP research in the world and the initial trends. A member of the Belgium team involved in the international “Worlds of Journalism”research will provide feedback and advice on the management of this large-scale research. During the third session, four PhDstudents taking part in the coding work of the JRP survey will be sharing their current thesis work and their approach to the study of journalistic standards and practices.Most participants will join these sessions by videoconference due to sanitary restrictions.For more information, please visitthe website: https://www.journalisticperformance.org/
